Castagneto Carducci is the main village of the homonymous municipality that includes the hamlets of Bolgheri, Donoratico and Marina di Castagneto.
Positioned on the crest of a hill, Castagneto is a picturesque medieval village offering a wonderful view of the surrounding countryside which gently slopes towards the sea and from where it is possible to admire the nearby islands of Elba, Capraia, Corsica and Gorgona.
The village is dominated by the Castle of the Counts Della Gherardesca family built around the year 1000. Once surrounded by walls, nowadays it is visible on the side facing the sea and, together with the church of San Lorenzo, constitutes the original core of the center of the village. A residential area has developed around the Castle according to a pattern of concentric rings that create a system of streets, alleys and characteristic squares.
The Municipality, which was originally called Castagneto Marittimo, changed its name at the beginning of the 20th century to honor the great poet Giosuè Carducci, who spent part of his life there; in fact the Museum named “Carducciano” offers the greatest records of the poet’s literary activity, linked to the sounds and scents of the Maremma.
Castagneto’s events are the real tourist attractions. From good food and good wine to concerts and street markets, summer in our area is absolutely relaxing but also rich in evening social events.
